Welcome to Tierney Education! Back in 2021, the Founder James Tierney kicked off this journey to tackle a challenge he saw too often in university classrooms: brilliant students not quite hitting their stride, not because they lacked talent, but because they were unsure of the daily steps necessary for success. Transitioning to college is a big leap – and it's perfectly normal to find it daunting. While universities are treasure troves of resources (check out my curated list of Penn State resources here), finding your way through them can be overwhelming. That's where we come in.

James is a powerhouse! He is dynamic, engaging, outgoing, but also sensitive and practices active listening!!! James was part of ACELE's inaugural workshop on inclusive teaching at the School of Economics at Georgia Teach, and he did an amazing job! He created the environment of a safe playground where seasoned and younger instructors, together with PhD students, felt safe to step outside of their comfort zones and roles, and interact with each other during fun learning activities. I saw many more smiles, heard many more laughs, and witnessed many more "Aha!" moments than at a typical academic workshop. This will be one of the most favorite memories of my professional life! My freshman doesn't have stellar organizational skills, and so for their first semester we looked into some extra coaching to help keep them on track. James at Tierney Consulting set up Monday meetings where they would review Canvas together and map out the project due dates and study schedule for the week. In the words of my kid, “James was always optimistic and the way he laid things out made it all seem achievable.” From my perspective, James was flexible and creative in designing a custom coaching plan, and his experience teaching at Penn State brought an invaluable perspective on how to navigate the system. The extra help paid off not just in better grades, but peace of mind for my freshman (and mom!).
